Floatation Therapy

Floatation therapy is an escape from the constant stress of life’s daily pressures and a natural way to heal the body and mind. The concept is similar to the mineral salt baths in the Dead Sea in Israel. Eight hundred pounds of Epsom salt are dissolved into the spa tub in skin temperature water to create this effect right here in Alexandria, VA. Both lightproof and soundproof, this peaceful space frees you of gravity, noise, and other distractions. Floatation therapy brings the body back into homeostasis. “The open-air design completely removes all feelings of claustrophobia. I cannot overemphasize the importance of having an open pool for anxious populations. Without it many of our patients would have refused to even try floating.”

Benefits of Floating

Floating, with no light or sound, is one of the fastest and most effective ways to elicit the body’s natural relaxation response and enter a state of deep relaxation. Your brain responds by removing undesirable chemicals and releasing endorphins, stimulating feelings of happiness and well-being. Simply put, floating in floatation pods calm our overly stimulated systems and restores the body’s chemical and metabolic balance. Studies have shown that stress can be profoundly helped by floatation therapy. That is why Synergy Float Spa partners with Pathways for Veterans to help people with PTSD.

Perceived stress can be correlated with increased levels of cortisol and in floatation therapy there is a natural tendency for cortisol to be reduced. For this reason, floatation therapy is one of the few noninvasive techniques available to manage stress when it is a factor in reducing a person’s ability to cope with normal life. Daily life has a way to take you away from yourself. It’s not uncommon for people to be in a state of constant stress activating the “fight-or-flight” response multiple times during the day. This can be brought on by any number of events such as traffic, inconsiderate people, or looming deadlines. Over time, such low-grade chronic stress can lead to high blood pressure, increased heart rate, and muscle tension. Visiting a floatation spa can help people counteract the toxic effects of chronic stress by slowing breathing rate, relaxing muscles, and reducing blood pressure. People often report feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and better able to cope with life’s minor annoyances after floating. These effects can last for a few days after a float. Read our floating tips to get the most from your session.

Research has shown that regular use of the float pod can help health problems that are caused or exacerbated by chronic stress such as fibromyalgia, insomnia, hypertension, anxiety disorders, and migraines. By invoking the relaxation response, blood flow increases to all parts and systems of the body, including the brain, creating a whole body healing effect. Floating also provides relief from the constant downward push of gravity, the single greatest cause of wear and tear to bones, joints and body tissue. The zero gravity effect also provides relief from discomfort during pregnancy.

Although athletes often turn to floatation therapy in order to cope with an injury, floatation therapy can actually be used to enhance athletic performance as well. Floating can help to relax muscles so that an athlete is better prepared physically for a big event, but it can also be used to enhance mental clarity in athletes. Since floatation therapy is able to impact both your mental and physical capabilities, it is an invaluable practice for serious athletes. As floating enhances your mental and physical abilities, you will experience a dramatic improvement in your overall athletic performance. The relaxation caused by floating can help to take pressure off of the tired joints and muscles that might be causing you pain. Floating can also help your whole body to relax so that your muscles align properly, which can prevent injuries and can help to speed your recovery time when you are dealing with an injury. CrossFit athletes, MMA fighters, long distance runners, and even professional golfers have been utilizing floatation therapy for some time. Several professional sports teams are incorporating it into their standard practices. Whether you’re a professional athlete, or play a sport for exercise or hobby, you can benefit from floating. Being inside the floatation pod, where sensory input is eliminated, produces a mental state where one’s learning abilities are at their highest and powers of visualization and auto-suggestion are greatly enhanced. As the float progresses, there is a transition from beta or alpha brainwaves to theta which can last indefinitely without losing consciousness. With practice one can increase the amount of time that they spend in the theta state. Many use the extended theta state as a tool for enhanced creativity and problem solving or for super learning. With the brain being held in a theta state wave-length, the mind becomes hyper-suggestible. With less distractions and greater resources at its disposal, the mind is able to absorb new material very deeply, with research showing improved performance in memory and recall activities. Types of Floating

Superior Evolution Float Pod

Synergy Float Spa has one Evolution float pod. Sleek design and smooth curves make the Evolution Float Pod stand out. Ours has custom features including passive ventilation, bench style edge seating, seamless design, starlight ceiling, and stainless hardware. It provides the subconscious feeling of being inside a mother’s womb. Only one person at time can float, and you can leave the pod lid open or closed. Synergy Float Spa recommends that each person float at least 3 times within a 30-day period to get the most out of the experience because each session builds on the other for the first three. We offer our biggest discount on a 3-float package to make it affordable to try it out. Most clients float for an hour at a time, but we allow you to customize it at Synergy Float Spa. You can even do an overnight float. For prices see our store.

Superior Float Cabin

We have two single person float cabins. Most float centers within central and south Florida have only float pods. Much larger than a Pod, if you think you might be claustrophobic then start in one of our rooms. We understand that each person is different which is why we offer 3 different varieties at Synergy Float Spa. After sampling many types of tanks, we believe that the cabin is a much better float experience. It’s a room inside a room, they have better sound cancelling and light shielding. And they are much bigger, as you can stand up inside them, so clients have less feelings of claustrophobia or isolation. Each tank has a passive ventilation system but in addition, because of the extra space most clients can breathe normally without any congestion that can be associated with other smaller tanks. All single person float prices are the same regardless of tank. See our store for prices.

Superior 2 Person Float Cabin

We have the only two-person float tank south of Jacksonville Florida. We believe floating is a solitary experience, however we understand there is strength in numbers therefore if you’re nervous about trying it, invite your significant other. Also great for a unique date experience. Ours has custom stars on the ceiling. Singles can also float in this tank and can spread out like a DaVinci man or woman and not be so confined. Our rooms are tall enough to stand up inside, like a walk-in closet. All float rooms have their own private showers, and most people float in the nude, but you can wear whatever you want. A two-person float does cost more than a single person but is less than two single person floats. See our store for pricing.

What People Are Saying

Meet our new Energy Healer - Lakshmi Puri

I was given the name Lakshmi from a renowned Yoga Master as a baby and grew up in a spiritual ashram near Washington D.C. I was immersed in the smells of incense, chiming bells, devotional prayers, and dedication to the healing path through practicing yoga asanas, pranayama (breath work), performing holy rituals, and repeating a mantra in meditation.

In meditation, a whole realm unveiled itself before me involving my intuitive wisdom to work with energy and connect to a higher consciousness beyond my mental comprehension and reasoning. It felt as if I had been doing this for lifetimes. I was guided to travel to Rajasthan, India where I started working with others as a healer here while strengthening my own Divine connection being in this Motherland of Spirituality. I then returned to the States to continue practicing with people all around the world. I truly look forward to connecting with you.  Sessions available on Sunday and Mondays starting on Feb. 19th.
